Schattenspiel (literally ‘shadow game’) explores the emotional world experienced by a young man. Even through social alienation, we have the ability to find joy and beauty on our own.
I composed the score for the film drawing on a series of piano improvisations and in-depth discussions with the director. I wrote in a style reminiscent of classical piano accompaniment and elements of the harmonic language of Schumann’s Liederkreise (song cycles). At times leading the picture, other times following it, I wanted to bring out the playful elements of the film, particularly in the shadow game sequence (beginning at 03:37).
Pianist Bethy Reeves played the score for recording.
