OXYMORON COLLECTIVE

PERFORMANCE COMMISSION

I was commissioned by Oxymoron Collective to produce a 40-minute performance piece accompanying their 2022 launch event. The performance revolved around a series of soundscapes built using synthesisers and field recordings. I looped and manipulated percussion and saxophone recordings using a contact microphone on stage. Benjy Sandler performed on the baritone saxophone.

Wolf Again (Stereo Mix) [5:41]

I subsequently produced poem-soundscapes dramatizing the poetry of Oxymoron member Prof. Katherine Craik. See above for ‘Wolf Again’, for which I created mixes in 5.1 and stereo.

For this piece, I used four operators generating sine waves with different rates of volume and pitch modulation to creating a shifting harmonic texture.

Oxymoron brings together the diverse communities of Oxford to facilitate genre-extending, genre-bending projects in literature, art, performance, and critical thinking.

We believe that working together, across disciplines and constituencies, is the surest way of finding new ways to do things better. This is why all of our projects are experiments in collaboration.

We work both within and outside the city’s famous universities; we want to open the doors and cloisters, allowing fresh ideas in and fresh ideas out.

We believe in creative collision, in risk, and in beauty. We want to shake the tree, catch the fruit, carve new shapes from the wood.

At Oxymoron, opposites attract.
