about

Leonard Maassen (b. 1998, Paris) is a German artist investigating the reciprocal relationships between human perception and techno-ecological processes.

Working across spatial audio, field recording, film, and environmental sensing, Maassen translates vast, irreversible processes into slow, intimate perceptual experiences through which infrastructures, temporalities, and ecological feedback loops become experientially legible. His projects operate as perceptual instruments and site-responsive environments that recalibrate attention and cultivate heightened sensory awareness. His practice is informed by ancient meditative traditions and more-than-human perspectives.

Recent projects include a collaborative installation with photographer Tomas van Houtryve supported by National Geographic, and a sound installation at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral. He has presented work and delivered talks at institutions including The Barbican
, London School of Economics, Modern Art Oxford and Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Maassen studied Geography at the University of Oxford and Electronic Composition / Sonic Arts at Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He was a 2023–2024 GSMD Junior Fellow and graduated with a Starred Distinction, receiving the Guildhall Research Prize for practice-led work at the intersection of sound, ecology, and spatial design.
